BACKGROUND
Set for completion in 2027, Curtin University’s B316 Sciences Building is an ambitious 20,000m² research and teaching facility designed to create a monumental shift, empowering students and staff to make a lasting impact on scientific industries. Designed to reflect Curtin University’s commitment to sustainability, fostering innovation, and enhance scientific research and education for the Faculty of Science & Engineering and Health Sciences for generations to come.
CHALLENGE
Reduce pile deflection when excavating to the desired basement level of this new build. Keller Australia completed the CFA piling around the perimeter of the excavation area. The surrounding area has many existing buildings that will be kept therefore ensuring the excavation can be completely safely with minimal disturbance to the neighbouring buildings is key. As the build is surrounded by university a large amount of services needed to be avoided when anchoring. The use of the Hulk Earth Anchor allows the team to safely anchor the pile face for full depth excavation and remove the tendon after use leaving only a small sacrificial anchor head.
SOLUTION
The solutions was developed by Keller Australia and involved the installation of 126 HG320 anchors at varying angles and lengths. Earth Anchor Systems worked with Lendlease to ensure the simultaneous works with other trades wouldn’t be affected when installing the anchors. The site being in a live university environment meant the team had to ensure they weren’t above the set parameters for noise & vibrations, this was managed by using the correct sized anchors to ensure smooth installation. Once the anchors were installed and proof tested, the pile face was shotcreted and once cured the team could proceed. The next step is to install the steel PFC pairs a variety of 1.2m and 1.8m lengths were used to lock off under the engineered load, the team moved quickly to ensure the excavation could begin as soon as the locking off was completed. The removal of the tendon will be completed once Lendlease has had the engineers sign off on the slab completions.
